Throwback The ’90s – Ripped; Coloured Jeans & Tying A Shirt Around The Waist

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH

When I saw this ’90s picture of myself, my memories of wearing this pair of purple jeans came vividly alive to me. I remember having to rip the jeans myself as it was in trend. I also owned a green pair which I never tore, but that’s another story.
Frankly speaking, I’d much rather be in coloured jeans than those neon leggings, which were just as popular in the ’90s.

Tying a shirt around our waist, well, everyone was doing it back then! I guess I was channelling Vivien Ward (aka Julia Roberts) from Pretty Woman (see the image below).
They were mostly plaid flannel shirts, but my shirt here was not a random shirt, it was a tie dye shirt and tie dye clothing was also hugely popular during the ’90s. Plus I was so in love with the colour purple, therefore I did the shirt and jeans purple double dose!

This location shot was taken by Taiwanese photographer Tsong-Chii Lynn. It did not appeal to me that much back then but now this photograph is growing on me. I love Taiwan’s black sandy beach and the fading away mountains as the background.., they remind me of Chinese ink paintings.

I was thinking it became popular from the dance movies like Footloose and Dirty Dancing, that said, I have found this a practical way to carry a spare shirt/jumper for years. Cheers!

    1. It’s lovely to hear your feedback Kent. Well I have to say that tying a shirt around my waist was never really ‘my thing’, I much prefer tying a sweater loosely around my neck as it’s very French Riviera! 😉

A big THANK YOU to you for editing my film scan. Much appreciated! X

  2. I fall in love with this look. ❤

    1. Awww.., thank you! 💋

  3. I like this – retro while still modern.

    1. Thanks Sarah! X

  4. I always mention the word BALANCE when referring to GOOD HEALTH, but this word applies to the fashion world as well. Those inspired by fashion enjoy experiencing ALL the different looks from around the world. Interestingly, most of these designs are recycled through the generations with minor adjustments to reflect modern times. There is much genius found in previous generation’s fashion and design.

    1. Yes fashion/trend most definitely repeats itself. For me, the important balance would be giving an old look a new life.
Thank you for your lovely feedback Dr. Jonathan. I think that you are a good observer and you do pay attention to details. X

  6. Oh gosh, I remember tying my cardigan around my waist but I never look as good as Julia Roberts! LOL! I always look like a slob instead.

    1. Haha~ I hear you Shireen, and I feel the same. But when Julia Roberts did it, she just looked effortlessly cool, right?!!! 🙂

  7. You are Fabulous in vintage jeans… More than Julia Roberts.

    1. Awww.., I’m flattered Kry. Thank you! X

  8. Look gorgeous Vivienne, both then and now. It’s funny how fashion history repeats, isn’t it? I must confess I was on the neon team, at that time, but today, i would definitely go for the ripped jeans look. 🙂

    1. Oh I’d love to see you in ripped jeans Sanne. 🙂 I grew up listening to the daughters of my nanny’s ‘girl talk’ and they told me that fashion always come back and it truly does!
I’m happy to hear your feedback and thank you for your lovely compliment! X

    1. I’m so glad to receive your positive feedback Margie. The truth is, these ’90s film negatives have discoloured and thanks to the throwback of the ’90s fashion trends that it had forced me to scan them and save them.
Thanks also for pointing out the tube top and you know what? I almost forgot about them until this series of old pictures resurfaced… 😀 X
